Urban Oasis, Manhattan 2024

Designing a large apartment as a temporary family home requires a careful balance between comfort, functionality and style.  It also needs the space to feel welcoming and cohesive for all family members.  The goal of this project was to create a space that feels lived-in but also flexible enough to accommodate the practical, functional and aesthetic emotional needs of the family. The desire for this sprawling four-bedroom apartment was to use earth tones, soft textures and clean lines to make the space a cozy escape from the chaos of the city.

Renovating this home was an exciting and nuanced process, which sought a balance between preserving the historic charm and modernizing the space for today's needs.  As a nod to a sophisticated traditional approach, the building’s historic elements became a focal point in the overall design process.  Working with a strict budget, the project began with a gut renovation of the kitchen and creating an arched opening for more light and space to enter the room.  The original hardwood floors were skillfully refinished and custom closets were installed throughout.  New electrical replaced the original and elegant lighting was installed.  Wallpaper, paint and new hardware were the finishing touches to create a beautiful space for this family to call home – a home that reflects their lifestyle and tells their story.
